A useful visual brief shows where your dog is starting, what has worked before, and one realistic direction to discuss. Here is the five-minute version.

The short answer

Bring a current photo, a favorite past groom, and one inspiration image with a similar coat. Point to the face, body, ears, feet, and tail details you like, then ask what is realistic for your dog’s coat today.

Take a current, well-lit photo that shows the full body, face, coat length, texture, markings, and any areas that need special attention. Avoid filters, costumes, and heavy shadows.

A past groom you loved

A photo of your own dog after a successful appointment is usually the clearest reference. Point out exactly what worked instead of asking another groomer to copy it without context.

Choose a dog with a similar coat type and use the image to discuss a shape or detail. Treat it as preference communication—not a guarantee that another coat can produce the same result.

Point to the details—not just the whole dog

Two people can look at the same reference and notice different things. Say which parts matter to you so the image does not have to carry the entire request.

Face: round, natural, or more open around the eyes.
Body: short and practical, medium and balanced, or fluffy.
Ears: fuller, shortened, or blended into the head.
Feet: neat and round, closely tidied, or natural.
Tail: full, balanced, or shortened for easier care.

Add one real-life constraint

Tell the groomer how often you can brush and what your dog’s daily life looks like. Swimming, mud, collars, harnesses, outdoor play, and missed brushing can all change which finish is practical to maintain.

Then leave room for the coat in front of the professional. Matting, skin needs, sensitivity, behavior, uneven growth, and coat texture may require a different plan from the photo.

Reference photo questions

Are dog grooming reference photos helpful?

Yes, when you point to the specific details you like and keep expectations flexible. A reference can communicate shape and preference, while the groomer still assesses coat condition, comfort, behavior, and what is practical today.

Should the reference dog be the same breed?

A similar coat type and texture are often more useful than breed alone. Even dogs of the same breed can have different density, growth patterns, proportions, and coat condition.

Can I use an AI grooming preview as a reference?

You can use it as a visual conversation starter if you clearly treat it as inspiration. AI images can contain mistakes and cannot inspect the real coat, so your groomer should decide what is safe and achievable.
