Dog after-swim care

Before the wet-dog nap, reset the coat.

Swimming changes the coat and the gear sitting against it. Use four calm moves, then ask your groomer to tailor the drying routine to your dog.

The short answer

Remove wet gear, rinse away relevant residue, press with an absorbent towel, and dry the gear separately. Check the coat near the skin and use the dog-safe drying method your groomer has demonstrated. Contact your veterinarian for pain, persistent odor, redness, or another skin or ear concern.

Remove wet gear

Take off the collar, harness, life jacket, and other wet fabric when it is safe to do so. Dry the gear separately instead of leaving it against the coat.

Rinse relevant residue

Fresh water can help remove salt, chlorine, mud, or visible lake debris. Ask your groomer how often this coat should be rinsed or bathed and which dog-specific products are appropriate.

Press with a towel

Use an absorbent towel to press and blot rather than scrubbing the coat back and forth. Work only within handling your dog accepts comfortably.

Finish the dog-specific drying routine

Check the coat near the skin and follow the dog-safe method your groomer has demonstrated. Avoid high heat and do not force a frightened dog through a drying setup.

Tell the groomer where your dog swims

Pool water, salt water, muddy lakes, clean freshwater, and frequent backyard splashing do not create the same upkeep question. Share the water type, frequency, coat length, gear, and drying equipment you can safely use at home.

Ask for a demonstration, not a generic product list

Have the groomer show you how to part and check this coat, what “dry near the skin” feels like, which areas need extra attention, and what to do if the dog will not tolerate the recommended setup. Use products made for dogs and follow their directions.

Should I rinse my dog after swimming in a pool, lake, or ocean?

The water and coat matter. Rinsing can remove salt, chlorine, mud, or visible debris, but bathing frequency and products should fit the individual dog. Ask your groomer or veterinarian for advice specific to the coat and skin.

Can my dog air-dry after swimming?

Why remove a wet collar or harness?
